This weekend, we visited the
New York Historical Society's Museum.

SFS' roommate is a high school history teacher, and he invited us on a trip to this neat museum on the Upper West Side. They have a mix of rotating exhibits and permanent collections, including a great exhibit about Abe Lincoln and NYC... hence this large sculpture just inside the front door.

But before we visited any of the exhibits, I was struck by the building, and all the cool architectural details... check out the main hall:

Whenever we go to a museum, SFS likes to start at the top floor and work his way down... so off we went to The Henry Luce III Center.

It was a whole floor of American artifacts, displayed by type.

It was amazing- there was so much to look at!

And while you can choose to look at it on you own...

Some of the artifacts are labeled by a special number. You can use your cell phone to call this number, and hear information about that particular item- isn't that a great idea?

And since the museum is all about NYC history, there were some items that only a New Yorker would appreciate... like
Alice In Wonderland's head! There's a large statue in Central Park depicting that famous story, and this is the original cast for the bronze sculpture... so cool!

But the top floor had more to offer than just sculptures- from tools...

(Complete with an entire case of butter molds...)

To a display of silver. Also, do you see that wheel in the left corner of the photo?

It belongs to this lovely coach!

I had so much fun looking through all the cases.
Especially the Tiffany area:

Aren't these lamps amazing?

I love how the base of this lamp looks like a tree trunk, as the shade depicts the flowering branches... SO beautiful!

But back to the artifacts- check out these campaign buttons and medals:

Or these coins:

I especially liked this area, because I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was a kid!

Glasses anyone?

This photo is kinda crummy, but I
LOVED this item... it was a toy "Noah's Ark", complete with hundreds of animals paired in a line leading to the ship!

After the top floor, we headed down to another level...

Unfortunately I wasn't supposed to take pictures of the paintings, so this is all I have to share on that level!

Back on the main floor, SFS and I checked out the Lincoln exhibit, which was really interesting (though I wasn't allowed to take pictures there, either).

And after we had our fill of the museum, we did a little shopping in the gift shop.

We sure had a great time at the museum!

If you'd ever like to check it out yourself, it's located on 77th Street and Central Park West!

Thank you for stopping by- I hope you had a wonderful weekend!!
