Popping up purple!

The other day I schlepped my camera all the way to my office. I desperately wanted to take a photo of the beautiful purple flowers that had bloomed along the front of Lincoln Center.

Of course, I was totally distracted on my way in and ended up not taking any pictures... go figure, right?

So on my way home, I snapped a few shots (in the dark) to make all that camera carrying worth it.

And as I was putting my camera away, my co-worker pointed out the tiny crescent moon over the Met... so I snapped a photo of that, too!

So while these weren't the pictures I had planned to take, they're still kinda nice!

What's happening down there today?

The other day I looked out the window at work...

And couldn't help but notice a line of people waiting outside of Avery Fisher Hall.

I'm guessing it was a school-group performing on a spring trip in NYC...

They were all so excited to be there and were running around like crazy. My colleagues and I watched them for a moment, imagining what it must be like to come to the city on a high school trip and cracking up because they looked hyper absolutely out of control... it was pretty funny!

Falling for fashion

As the first week of February rolls by, my thoughts are focused on finishing all the productions and projects at work that must take place before the students leave for spring break at the end of the month. So when I was leaving work the other night and saw this advertisement, I was momentarily thrown-off!
I mean, I can't even think about my summer plans, let alone what I plan on wearing next fall! Lucky for me and the rest of the world, the fashion industry is way ahead of me... and they're all set for Fall 2011 Fashion Week, which starts on Thursday!
So here's to seeing lots of famous people outside my office at the end of the week, and pushing my way through hordes of leggy models to get to the Starbucks counter! :)

White out!

When I left for work yesterday morning, the world was white!
The Northeast is still being bombarded with snow, and yesterday morning was no different.
And as I made my way to the office, where I was sure to arrive as a dripping, melting mess, I consoled myself with the thought that the walk home would be a lot less snowy.
But boy, was I wrong about that! Because by the time I made my way home, another storm had rolled in...
And this one was even worse than than the first!
So as you can imagine, I was pretty thrilled to finally make it home! I've never been so happy to have a thick, wool coat and warm, dry boots!

Christmas at Lincoln Center

As I was heading home last night, I stopped by Lincoln Center to capture the "holiday cheer" with my good camera.
Believe it or not, there aren't a whole lot of Christmas decorations in this area.
Luckily, the Met puts up their annual Christmas tree, which adds a bit of seasonal flair to the plaza!
And while this area might be devoid of Christmas lights, I think the beautiful fountain sorta makes up for it!
And while the only Christmas tree in the area is relatively modest, this ad for The Nutcracker sure makes a statement!

It's Christmastime in the city...

Last night, as I was walking home from work, I was day dreaming about the holidays.
And as I walked, I started walking past all sorts of holiday decorations... and I had an inspiration...
From now until Christmas, I'm only going to blog about the holidays! I'm really excited about it- so I hope you're in the mood for some cheer!

I just happened to be walking by as they were setting up the Christmas Tree in front of Lincoln Center... 'tis the season to get excited for Christmas!

All lined up...

When I got to work yesterday, there was a line of people up the block. They had apparently slept there all evening in preparation for the Harry Potter movie premiere which was being premiered in the theater next door.
By the time the evening rolled around, this same shot was a scene of pandemonium! Thousands more people had shown up, and we could hear their screams inside our school as the stars of the show walked the red carpet.

Things like this remind me that I never know what to expect when living in a wonderful city like NYC...

Sunday = FUN DAY!

Yesterday was a really fun (and busy) Sunday. I took my camera phone with me everywhere- want to see what I did?

First up, I went to church.
Yesterday was a big deal at church- we celebrated the bicentennial and in addition to over 30 clergy members in attendance, we welcomed the presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church... it was really fun!
And that fun was compounded when I found out that I got to sit in the pew closest to the organ- I love watching the organists play the pedals on the fast pieces (it's quite a show)!
After church I headed uptown to another church.
A friend of mine was performing in an off-off-off Broadway show in the church's basement.
I'm really glad I could be there to support my friend!
After that it was back across town to attend the Richard Tucker Gala at Avery Fisher Hall.
The hall was packed to the gills with people- it was quite a sight!
But once everything calmed down and the program began, I was in heaven! The event featured performances by: PAVOL BRESLIK, FERRUCCIO FURLANETTO, ELİNA GARANČA, MARCELLO GIORDANI, BRANDON JOVANOVICH, SIMON KEENLYSIDE, ANGELA MEADE, ANNA NETREBKO, LISETTE OROPESA, DEBORAH VOIGT, and JAMES VALENTI (who was the Richard Tucker Award winner for 2010). It was an incredible evening of music featuring some of my favorite arias (hello "È la solita storia del pastore") and a surprise appearance by Susan Graham!
Now you can see why Sunday = FUN DAY for me... talk about a great day full of exciting performances! I hope you had a good weekend as well- thank you for visiting!

What are they building now?

Remember the other day when I was saying that there's always something new going on at Lincoln Center?
Well, it sure rings true this week! On top of the HD videos, the plaza is also being set up for New York Fashion Week. This HUGE event is moving from it's previous home in Bryant Park to the plaza outside my office... and I get to watch as things progress!
Pretty cool, huh? I'll have to keep you updated on the process- I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Long day's journey into night....

The school year is coming to an end, which means I don't have much time to finish up the projects at work before I leave for what is sure to be an epic summer of fun! But with only a few days left in the office, I have a lot to do... which means I've been going home after the sun sets.
So on my walk home last night, I stopped to snap a few photos of Lincoln Center. I started with the Metropolitan Opera, and then turned to the right to photograph Avery Fisher Hall.
And to my left were the cool light fixtures at the Koch Theater.
One of the newest features of the Lincoln Center is the electronic stairway leading up to the theaters. Throughout the day messages, information, and performance updates are displayed along these scrolling screens.
Kind of a neat feature, right? I really like working in this part of town...
I mean, how could you not?

The hottest lunch spot in NYC!

The other day, we had an impromptu picnic.
Remember last summer, when I shared this photo with you?
Well, the Lincoln Center "green space" is finally finished!
When we noticed that this luscious expanse of green outside our office window was finally open for visitors, my coworker and I jumped and the chance to enjoy lunch on the lawn.
So we grabbed some cold drinks from Starbucks...
And a couple of sandwiches from 'wichcraft (thanks Tom Collichio).
My co-worker had the PB&J...
While I had the grilled gruyère (with caramelized onions on rye bread).
Talk about a lovely lunch! Of course, we weren't the only ones enjoying the grass. The dance majors were having a ball as well- and even engaged in a cartwheel contest!
I can't tell you how fabulous this little patch of green can be in such a concrete jungle like Lincoln Center- and on a sunny day in NYC, it's definitely the hottest lunch spot around!
