The Crossroads of the World

This weekend, I found myself in the heart of Times Square.
I was out and about, and decided to stop by one of the most famous spots in NYC. I like to take a stroll through every now and then, just to see what's going on.
I usually try and stay away from this area, since it is often so congested- but I also like to people watch... and I think the TKTS stairs are the perfect spot to do just that!
There's always so much happening in this part of town. For example, within 2 blocks I stumbled across 4 "characters". I don't really understand who these people are, as they weren't affiliated with any stores or promotions as far as I could tell... so I was a little creeped out!
Oh, and you know what else I like to do when I'm in Times Square?
I like to take pictures of the advertisements. I know it may sound weird, but they change so often... it's kind of neat to have a memento of what was "in" and "popular" on a certain date! In that vein, here's a little collage of what's adorning Times Square these days:
Thanks for joining me on this little stroll through Times Square...
I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Quitting time

Like everyone else in the world, I sometimes have to work late. For example, the other day I got home just as the sun was setting over Manhattan!
A few weeks ago, I snapped a photo as I crossed Broadway at dusk!
And earlier this week, the subway broke down and I took a taxi home after it had gotten dark.
(Yes- I totally took photos out the window as we sped across town... why do you ask?)
As we crossed the Queensborough Bridge, I had a wonderful view of the NYC skyline.
You know what? I've decided leaving work late isn't so bad... especially when I get to take weird pictures like these! Thanks for stopping by- I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Bundt baking...

Have I told you how much I love making bundt cakes?
Well, if not... I DO! I really, really, REALLY like making bundt cakes! I mean, whenever I have the opportunity to bake something (for a party, event, sick friend, etc.), I always try to make a bundt. Plus, I'm pretty sure people like it when I show up with a bundt, because they get to act out that scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding! You know the one, right?

Quick- how many times do you think I'll use the word "bundt" in this post? (Hint: 5 so far!)

We celebrated my boss' birthday at a morning staff meeting earlier this week- so I offered to bake a coffee cake. This Poppy Seed Cake recipe is something that's been floating around my family for ages- it's easy to make, and tastes divine! Don't believe me? You'll see what I mean in a few more photos...

For this cake, you'll need the following:
I added all the ingredients to the mixing bowl (per the instructions in the recipe)...
And poured the batter into my Bavaria bundt pan.
45 minutes later, I whipped this baby out of the oven.
Once it had cooled a bit, I flipped the cake into my bundt cake carrier. (Look- they really do exist!)
But before I headed to the office, I had to take a quick photo.
When I finally made it to the office, I slid the cake onto a little cake plate, and took it to our staff meeting.
And less than an hour later, this is all that was left.
Yep- 7 people ate most of the cake in one sitting. How's that for a ringing endorsement? If you'd like to whip up this cake, here's the recipe:

Poppy Seed Cake

Ingredients:
2 sticks of margarine (although my recipe calls it oleo)
1/2 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1 box Duncan Hines Butter cake mix
Directions:
Cream together oleo and sugar, then add other ingredients. Spray bundt pan with Baker's Joy. Pour cake batter into bundt pan. Cook at 350 for 34-50 minutes. Let cool in pan for 10-15 minutes before turning out onto plate.
Oh, and if you were wondering, this lonely piece lasted about 20 seconds after I took this photo...
I swear, college kids can sniff out free food a mile away!

Thank you for stopping by- I hope you have a wonderful day!

Oh- and the answer is 9!

Lens love

I recently got a new lens for my camera.
As you've seen the past couple of days, I've really enjoyed playing with it!
For example, on my way to work the other day, I took some pictures along Central Park.
Now, since this new lens has a fixed focal length, there's a bit of a learning curve...
(Every time I bring the camera to my eye, I always have to take a couple of steps back...)
But I'll figure that out eventually!)
In the meantime, I'll just keep practicing...
And drooling over all this lovely bokeh!
Thank you for stopping by- I hope you have a great Wednesday!

Great Galette!

Earlier this year, one of my co-workers found out that I like to cook/bake. He has been weeding out his cookbook collection, and has passed along some amazing books! This weekend, I cracked one of the new books open, and baked my first Galette de Gannat!
It's a crusty cheese bread, and I'm pretty please with how it turned out! Here's what it took:
I started by combining the a cup of flour, yeast, and salt. Then I added the eggs (one at a time) and the butter (cut into little pieces).
Once the batter was combined, I added the rest of the flour until the dough was elastic.
After that, I turned it out onto the counter to knead- by hand!
I'll admit: my kneading needs a little practice- but I'm working on it! After kneading for 5 minutes or so, I started kneading the cheese into the dough.
Once everything was combined, I put it into a bowl...
Covered it in plastic wrap, and placed it in a warm spot.
After 90 minutes, the bread had risen considerably.
(And at this point, it smelled SO delicious! Yeast and cheese- talk about a match made in heaven!)
I split the dough in half, and shaped them into rounds (hence Galette in the title).
I left them to rise for about 40 minutes under waxed paper, before putting them in the oven at 375 degrees.
About 40 minutes later, I pulled these cuties out of the oven. (I knew they were done when, according to the recipe, they produced a hollow sound when "thwacked" on the bottom with my finger).
Once the loaves cooled a bit, I sliced into one of 'em.
Talk about yummy- the bread is crumbly (thanks to the butter) and moist (thanks to the cheese)! And since the recipe makes 2 loaves: I had one to keep, and one to give to my coworker as a thank you for all the wonderful cookbooks!
Here's the recipe, in case you want to make this bread at your house:

Galette de Gannat
(Gannat Cheese Bread)
Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups bread flour (approximately)
2 packages dry yeast
2 tsp. salt
6 eggs, room temperature
1 cup butter, cut into small chunks
8 oz Swiss cheese, grated

Directions:
In a mixing bowl, combine one cup flour, yeast and salt. Add eggs, one at a time until well blended. Add pieces of butter, and mix until combined. Start adding flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until dough is elastic and pulls from away from the sides of the mixing bowl. Turn dough onto a flat surface, and knead by hand for 6 minutes. Press dough flat, and cover with grated cheese. Knead for an additional 2-3 minutes to distribute the cheese evenly throughout the dough. Place the dough in a warm place, covered in plastic wrap, to rise for 90 minutes. Take the dough from the bowl, divide in two, and shape into loaves on a baking sheet. Cover with wax paper and allow to rise for 40 minutes. Place into pre-heated oven, at 375 degrees, for 20 minutes. When loaves are finished, place on wire rack to cool.
Thank you for stopping by- I hope you have a great day!

I am one spoiled girl!

As you know, I celebrated a birthday on Saturday (thank you to everyone who left sweet comments on my blog over the weekend)! I was thrilled to hear from so many of my family and friends... and I made out like a bandit in the gift department.

Case in point, look at what Starbucks gave me:
That's right- they bought me a chai latte... wasn't that thoughtful?
Meanwhile, Sephora went all out...
They picked out this eyeliner, mascara, and eye shadow just for me!
And if that wasn't good enough, I got some other really great/thoughtful presents from my family and friends. I felt totally spoiled when my birthday came to a close! Thank you to everyone- it was a marvelous day!

Oh, and before I go, can share one more thing?
That's right- I also got a new lens for my camera. I had so much fun playing with it over the weekend! Here's a taste of what this baby can do:
I know- I'm smitten! I hope you had a wonderful weekend as well- thank you for stopping by!
