Honey Oatmeal Bread
Ingredients:
2 cups Water
1 cup Rolled Oats
⅓ cups Butter
⅓ cups Honey
1 teaspoon Salt
4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
1 Egg
5 cups flour
Directions:
In small saucepan, heat 1 cup water to boiling. Stir in oats, butter, honey and salt. Let stand until mixture cools to 110 to 115 degrees F, stirring occasionally. Heat remaining cup of water to 110 to 115 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in the warm water. Add the egg, oat mixture, and 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a stiff dough. Spread batter evenly into one or two greased loaf pans, depending on size. Smooth tops of loaves. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 35 to 40 minutes. Bake at 375F for 25 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

Honey Oatmeal Bread
I love sandwiches... just like Joey Tribbiani! (Come on- Friends anyone?) Turkey, ham, even bologna... sandwiches are delicious!
But do know what makes a plain ol' sandwich even better? When it's made using homemade bread! So this weekend, I whipped up a loaf of Honey Oatmeal Bread... wanna see how I did it?
I found a simple recipe on the internet, and it only called for these simple ingredients:
I started by boiling water on the stove.
Once it had reached a rolling boil, I measured out the oatmeal, honey, salt and butter...
And added them to the boiling water. I then turned off the burner, and stirred the mixture as it cooled a bit.
Meanwhile I measured some yeast...
And dissolved it in some warm water in the bowl of my mixer.
When the oatmeal mixture was cool enough not to kill the yeast, I added it to the mixing bowl...
Along with some flour and an egg...
And then I let my mixer do all the work!
Once the mixture was pretty smooth, I added the rest of the flour and finished the dough!
I then smoothed the dough into greased bread pans...
And put them in a warm place to rise.
And after plenty of time for rising and baking, I had a loaf yummy bread cooling in my kitchen! (Okay, at this point you're probably noticing that I had 2 pans of dough rising, and yet only 2 loaf to show for mt efforts. Turns out I misread the recipe, and the dough makes one large loaf! Ooops! So I combined my dough and just made one big loaf... guess that'll teach me to read my directions a little more carefully!)
When the loaf cooled enough, I was able to slice it up- talk about tasty! This bread is moist and slightly sweet- and yet the oatmeal lends a hardy texture to the whole thing... yummy!
If you'd like to try this bread sometime, here's the recipe:
Oh- and I can speak from experience to say that this bread makes an excellent ham sandwich!
Thanks for visiting- I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

3 items...
I received a ton of awesome presents for Christmas, thanks to my incredibly generous family and friends! And now that the holidays are over and life is "back to normal", I'm able to recognize how in just a few short days some of those presents are changing my life. Here are three gifts: one that's completely changed my life already, one that's starting to change my life, and one that's going to change my life. So, first up:
1. This has item has completely changed my life: A KINDLE
That's right- this tiny little machine is my newspaper, magazine, and book in one... and it's transformed my commute to work! Now all that time I spend on the subway is spent reading a whole slew of things, yet now my purse is even lighter than it used to be as I schlepped books everywhere I went!

2. This item is starting to change my life: A CAMERA BAG/PURSE
What might look like a lovely purse is actually a camera bag, complete with Velcro dividers...
That holds my camera, extra lenses, and all the normal contents of my purse. I can't tell you how helpful this new purse has been as I traipse all over the city- I just love it!

3. This item is going to change my life: BEATER BLADE
Yes, you're reading the packaging correctly- this paddle for my KitchenAid scrapes the bowl as it mixes. Isn't that a brilliant idea? I can't wait to use this the next time I whip up something sweet in the kitchen.

As you can see, I was totally spoiled over Christmas- and my life couldn't be better because of it!
What awesome gifts did you get over the holidays?

Detroit is HOCKEYTOWN!
Before I left Michigan after the holidays, I hung out with my brother at one of the most popular places in Detroit...
Joe Louis Arena! By now, I'm pretty sure you have guessed who plays here...
The Detroit Red Wings! Believe it or not, I have never seen a Wings game, so I was pretty stoked to have the opportunity to change that... plus it gave me the chance to hang out with my bro!
While the team warmed up, I couldn't help but stare in amazement at all the championship banners... talk about one amazing team!!
And after the zambonis did their things, it was time for the game to begin!
And boy, was it exciting!! Unfortunately the Flyers ended up winning the game (by one dumb ol' point), but I still had a blast watching the game!
Oh- and the Wings managed to score a couple of points along the way, so my brother got to use his new beacon hat a few times. (And by the way, that hat was an object of desire for most of the fans who saw it- people were checking it out all night!)
So thanks, bro, for showing me around Detroit and taking me to my first Wings game!
For those of you who've never seen a hockey game, either, I used my phone to record a few minutes of play... check it out:
Thanks for visiting my blog! (Also, I'm sorry I missed a couple of posts this week- my modem was acting up and I just got it working again.) I hope you have a great day!

A very Midland Christmas
As is the case with most people, we celebrate several Christmases with different family members each year... and this year was no exception. So over the weekend, we celebrated our last Christmas of 2010 with my extended family on my dad's side.
We convened in the activity room of my grandma's nursing home...
Where we opened tons of presents...
(Which made my cousin, BTV, very happy!)
And feasted on lasagna and cakes (pumpkin cheesecake and carrot cake)...
(Which made my Dad very happy!)
It was so fun to get together with the group- we always have a good time...
And this year was no different...
As you can see for yourself!
But the usual fun was increased thanks to the newest additions to our family, PLR and CMV, who are a blast to play with and photograph!
(Here is PLR reading a new book with his mom)...
Of course, the bigger kids were just as entertaining to photograph...
So as you can probably imagine, I have a ton of fun photos from our afternoon together!
For example, here's one of CMV with his mom...
And both the babies playing "Row, row, row your boat" with their Poppi (my uncle)...
Aren't they precious?
They both have such distinct and entertaining personalities...
And it's so fun to watch them grow up!
I took way too many photos during the day, so here are a few of my favorites. CMV wearing his Poppi's new running vest:
PLR enjoying a mid-afternoon snack:
CMV back in the box:
Poppi and PLR hanging out:
BTV playing with CMV:
And SBV showing off his six-pack (it's really a baking pan).
Thanks for stopping by- I hope you had a great weekend
